Hello friends! I hope to spend a beautiful summer with enjoyable activities. Our topic for today is childhood obesity and how integrating regular exercise in children’s program to help prevent and reduce obesity.

Childhood obesity is steadily rising as a result it has been described as one of the greatest public health problems of the 21st century. In Europe it is estimated that around 140 million children are overweight and obese, while a recent study by the World Health Organization in 13 countries in Europe including Cyprus demonstrates the problem since 24% of children aged 6 -9 years are above normal weight. The effects of childhood obesity can be dangerous to the overall health of the child. Bear the cardiovascular system observed atherosclerotic lesions, changes a child and its metabolic profile, the occurrence of type 2 diabetes is increasing due to increased insulin resistance caused by the accumulation of fat, problems observed in the socio-psychological situation of obese children. The literature also mentions the emergence of new disease ‘childhood hypertension’ with reckless consequences. Very dangerous consequence of childhood obesity on public health is that there are very high chances to become an obese adult with a host of cardiovascular and other problems.

High correlation has been found in childhood obesity caused mainly by eating habits, reduced physical activity and increased sedentary activities (TV, video games etc.). The physical activity of children seems to follow a downward trend over time, so it no longer meets the recommended exercise time recommended by the World Health Organization – at least 60 minutes daily. Considering that childhood is the most critical in adopting behaviors and habits that tend to guide the person later in life, it is very important that we as parents, teachers, society can positively influence in regard to applying good habits such as regular exercise, proper nutrition, reducing sedentary habits. Of course, the best way is by our example, because as we know children imitate adults. So, working out regularly in various ways, doing physical activities with them, enforcing healthy dietary rules, drastically reducing the time watching TV.

Naming different types of exercise and some of the benefits that children can try and depending on your preferences and interests will want to do systematically with pleasure.
